Our Story

Bring Back the Rebels

Northern California is home to tremendous softball talent — but for a decade, that talent was watered down by team splintering and inconsistent coaching, forcing top local girls to leave the area for stronger competition and recruiting opportunities.

Rebels General Manager Ryan Shaw saw the pattern and brought it to former Redding Rebel players. The message back was unanimous: bring back the Rebels. Build an elite, unified, development-focused travel program and keep Northern California athletes together.

Today's team is backed by the original Rebels legacy — a sisterhood of former collegiate stars, national champions, Olympians and high-level coaches who once wore the jersey.

The Legacy

A Legendary Program

Roger and Vicky Dawes, owners of the original R&R Quality Meats in Redding, founded the Rebels so north state athletes could reach higher levels of the sport — and earn free educations along the way. Over the next 20 years the Rebels won four national titles, coached Team USA to a world title, won the Canada Cup, and developed countless All-Americans, Division I players, and 12 Olympic athletes from four different countries. Our athletes learn where the Rebels came from, who wore the jersey before them — and that professional players, Olympians and elite coaches are cheering for them now.

Leadership

Rebels Legends Leading the Way

Ryan Shaw

Head Coach & General Manager

Ryan founded the modern Rebels after watching a decade of Northern California's top talent scatter across splintered rosters, rebuild every season, and leave the area to find competitive play. He brought that concern to former Rebels legends, assembled a founding board of Division I head coaches and All-Americans, and built the program around one purpose: develop exceptional athletes to compete at the next level.

Tami Brown

Former University of Oregon Head Coach · Division I Athlete · Rebels Team Captain

First female athlete to earn a scholarship to a major Pac-10 school. First-team All-American shortstop who led the Rebels to their first national title. Played on Team USA, winning gold in Shanghai, and named Most Valuable Shortstop at the Canada Cup. Head coach at Stanford, assistant at Arizona State, and head coach at Oregon by age 26 — the Ducks' winningest coach until 2008.

Dena Carter

Former Oklahoma State All-American · Rebels Pitcher

All-Conference athlete and pitcher for the Redding Rebels, who went on to build one of the top woman-owned businesses in the nation.

Coaching Philosophy

Get Them Ready.

Our core purpose is to prepare athletes for college in every way possible, developing players holistically.

Mental Strength

Competitive and growth mindset coaching, assigned reading, pressure performance, goal setting, personal accountability, leadership development, and guest lectures from top-level coaches and players.

Athletic Training

Access to Sun Oaks Training and The Cage — speed and agility, strength training, conditioning, and off-season reps.

Team Culture

Excellence in practice. Coachable. Respectful. Adaptable. Self-motivated. Hard-working. Team-centered.

Skill Development

Advanced position training with an elite coaching staff.

Position Philosophy

College coaches expect players to be ready to play any position. Players give their top three position preferences and we develop those skillsets — while expecting them to play wherever the team needs them most. Athletes who can play multiple positions have significantly higher recruiting value.

Team Travel & Parents

Travel Like a College Team

Our goal is two team vans. Players travel to tournaments and camps together and share hotel rooms — building loyalty and sisterhood while practicing college travel standards: team meals, game review, consistent routines, recovery and mental prep.

Parents are welcome to travel to tournaments, and players will have a few minutes after games to visit before rejoining their team for prep, meals and travel. For families with financial constraints, team-handled accommodations greatly reduce travel costs.

Parent conduct matters. College coaches observe how families behave in the stands. Our parents commit to positive, fun encouragement — and to bringing any concerns to a coach first and only. Respecting the process creates understanding and a pathway forward.

College Recruiting

A System to Get Recruited

With help from current college coaches, we're building a system for our players to get themselves recruited:

Fundraising: The Rebels organization runs fundraising efforts to offset costs beyond player fees, so we can enter the best opportunities for our athletes — including tournaments that require travel by van and even by plane.
